Under the ASL Act the term "parent" has the same meaning as in the Education (Scotland) Act 1980 and is very broad. It includes "guardian and any person who is liable to maintain or has parental responsibilites in relation to or has care of a child or young person"
Young people have rights on their own behalf under the ASL Act. A young person is one who is over school age, generally between 16 and 18 years of age and who is receiving school education.
