Who do we work with?

Psychological Services works with children and young people from birth through our Surestart psychologists and generically from around age three, through the school years and into post-school provisions.
We can be involved with children and young people who have additional support needs for any reason.  This would include learners who experience learning difficulties; social, emotional or behaviour difficulties; sensory difficulties; physical or health needs; along with more able learners.

What do we offer?

Consultation and assessment to help clarify the nature and extent of learners’ needs.
Consultation and advice on

  • Support arrangements within class or within school
  • Adaptations or modifications to the curriculum
  • Approaches to teaching and management, including any specialist approaches or programmes
  • Suitable learning materials
  • Adaptations or modifications to the learning environment

Consultation and advice towards an ASP, IEP or CSP.
Direct work with pupils, families, groups of pupils, whole classes of pupils, whole schools.
Attendance at PSGs
Contribution to selected reviews
Assistance with transition planning
Involvement in decisions about future placement
Advice on support and resources which may be required
Work with parents (e.g. video interactive guidance, parents groups)
Training for school staff.
Joint working with other partnership services and agencies including VTSS, EAL and HOTS; and with social work and health
Advice on referral to other agencies.

How do we become involved?

We would normally have a pre-referral discussion with the establishment and the parents to clarify the expectations surrounding our involvement.
We require the parent’s informed consent to the referral.
If agreed at the pre-referral discussion, establishments then complete a referral form available on EGfL or from Psychological Services on
