Who do we work with?

The EAL Service works in partnership with CEC educational establishments to support bilingual learners who require additional support because they are learning English as an Additional Language.
We also support schools and other relevant agencies to develop best practice for working with minority ethnic pupils and families.

What do we offer?

Consultation and advice on

  • Identifying and meeting the additional support needs of bilingual learners
  • Assessment and placement of bilingual learners
  • Effective learning and teaching approaches and resources that will facilitate English language development and access to the curriculum for bilingual learners
  • Linguistic and cultural matters
  • Race equality policy and practice
  • Links with local community services (e.g. ESOL classes, Interpretation and Translation Services) and other agencies
  • Enrolment and induction procedures for new bilingual learners
  • The drawing up of an ASP, IEP or CSP as appropriate
  • Effective communication with the parents of bilingual and minority ethnic learners

Collaborative teaching of bilingual pupils within mainstream and special settings
Bilingual support for some early stage/targeted bilingual pupils
Modelling of teaching strategies and approaches
Monitoring of progress of bilingual learners through the stages of English
Support for the improved involvement of bilingual and minority ethnic parents
CPD (on language support and race equality & inclusion) for school and other staff whose work involves the support of bilingual and minority ethnic pupils.
Advice and support to schools on issues of bilingual and minority ethnic achievement and inclusion
Joint working with other partnership services and agencies including Psychological Services, VTSS, HOTS and other relevant services including social work and health.

How do we become involved?

Most CEC primary and secondary schools receive regular visits from an EAL teacher.
