Who do we work with?

The Hospital and Outreach Teaching Service (HOTS) provides educational support to meet the needs of vulnerable children and young people experiencing interrupted education.
To facilitate continuity and progression in the pupils’ learning, their school retains overall responsibility for the provision of appropriate resources and information.

Pupils who experience an interrupted education may include those who are:

  • In hospital
  • At home but unable to attend school due to ill health
  • Attending Forteviot and the Young Persons’ Unit (Royal Edinburgh)
  • Excluded or on the verge of exclusion
  • Looked After and Accommodated
  • Gypsy/Travellers or Occupational Travellers
  • Pregnant or young mums

What do we offer?

Consultation and advice.

In hospital and at home - The Service provides educational support to pupils who have sustained absence from school. We aim, as far as possible, within the constraints of their medical condition and treatment, to provide an individualised educational input.

Forteviot - The Service provides the educational element of medical referrals to Forteviot. This ranges from assessment in the Younger Programme to academic and/or behavioural input in the Older Programme.

YPU - The Service provides educational input to young people who are in-patients, attend Day Programme or Early Onset of Psychosis Symptoms Service within the YPU. Pupils are taught in a classroom by subject specialists at all levels of the secondary curriculum.

LAAC - The Service provides educational and behavioural support to children and young people who are looked after and accommodated. Support is provided for pupils who are excluded from school, who are non-attending, or who are experiencing significant difficulties in school. The Service may provide time limited, targeted Learning Assistant support for Looked After and Accommodated Children who are experiencing significant difficulties in school. Where a child would benefit from one-to-one support to improve their educational attainment, the Service may provide out of school hours tuition.

Gypsy/Travellers - The Service provides educational support to children or young people who are members of the Gypsy/Traveller and Occupational Traveller Communities. Pupils who are starting school for the first time, returning to school after a period of travelling or experiencing significant difficulties in school are eligible for support. The Service may provide time limited, targeted Learning Assistant support for members of the Gypsy/Traveller and Occupational Traveller Communities who are experiencing significant difficulties in school.

The Education of Pregnant Schoolgirls and Young Mums - The Service has a Young Mums’ Unit which is a resource to facilitate the continuing education of secondary age girls who are either pregnant or have a young child. The Unit is based in Wester Hailes Education Centre where there is a crèche available for the babies.

The Education of Children and Young People who are Excluded or on the Verge of Exclusion from School - The Service provides educational and/or behavioural support to primary and secondary pupils who are excluded from school.
Primary pupils who are experiencing significant difficulties in school and are on the verge of exclusion may also be eligible for support.

Advice on referral to other agencies

How do we become involved?

HOTS is a referral based Service.
We require the parent’s informed consent to the referral.
Referral forms are available on EGFL or from HOTS.
All referrals are assessed by the Head of Service and, if judged to be appropriate, teaching will commence as soon as possible. With cases of children and young people with medical conditions, referrals will also be assessed by Community Child Health Services.
