School staff meet the Prime Minister
Librarians Rachel McCabe and Lynne Brown from Gracemount High School have found out the Prime Minister’s favourite book is Ivanhoe by Walter Scott and that he is currently reading Muslim Jesus: Sayings and Stories in Islamic Literature edited by Tarif Khalidi.

They were part of a group of seven school staff who travelled to Downing Street to meet the Blairs at a special reception to recognise the work of support staff in schools. To say they had a good time is an understatement. All were brimming over with enthusiasm and excitement about their time at No 10. To see a picture of the group, click here.

The Himalayan Children’s Dance Tour - Volunteers needed - (host families, buddies, drivers, street collectors, etc)
Ten children and young people, aged 8 – 20 are coming to Edinburgh (Sunday 14 August – Tuesday 6 September) from a children’s home in Kathmandu, Nepal. Most speak quite good English. They were previously street children who found their way to a soup kitchen, run by Rokpa, an international charity. (see www.rokpa.org). They will be travelling with their adopted mother Lea Wyler (founder of the children’s home) and an assistant to present their own dance performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in Edinburgh schools and at the Edinburgh Mela (see www.rokpauk.org).

If you might be able to act as a host family, the entire period is preferable but your help for one or two weeks during this time might also be helpful.

If hosting isn't your thing, there are other ways to help. If you are a driver with your own car, would like to act as a buddy to escort small groups, cook for lunch, distribute publicity or act as a street collector, please get in touch.

For more information and to register interest in hosting children please contact diana108@btopenworld.com or by phone at 0131 652 1316

Cairnpark success

Wellington do the double – again!
Wellington School football team have surpassed all expectations this season by capturing the League Title and the Cup in the Scottish Small Schools League which includes teams from across Scotland.

The Cup Final, played at the Warout Stadium, Glenrothes against a team from a Glasgow School, St John’s Springboig was a tense affair with a 'backs to the wall' performance from the whole team to hold on to a 2 – 1 lead. First half goals from Erskine and Cartwright gave the Welly a comfortable half time lead but a goal back by St John’s in the second half led to a nerve wracking finish for all concerned.

Head of School, John Mackie said "This was a magnificent effort by the whole squad this season but special credit must go to our coach Keith Jamieson and his little helper, James Welch and to our inspirational captain, Jamie Erskine. I couldn’t be more pleased for the team and the credit which they bring to the school by their exemplary behaviour both on and off the pitch".
