In the news

Oxgangs celebrates new building
A bright sun shone down on the day as staff, pupils and visitors met in the playground of Oxgangs Primary School to celebrate the opening of their new school building. John Grant, the children’s author and illustrator - most famous for the adventures of Little Nose, a young cave boy - unveiled a plaque to mark the start of this new chapter in the school’s story.

A fire in October 2001 destroyed so much of their old building and disrupted school life. This long awaited party really heralds a return to normal life. This was acknowledged by Cllr Rev Ewan Aitken, the Executive Member for Children and Families when he praised the commitment of Keith Berkley, his staff and school board who kept things running smoothly through a difficult period. He went on to thank everyone involved for their hard work that made sure that the school can now enjoy their brand new building.

Edinburgh pupils get behind pavilion project
Pupils from Newcraighall Primary School have collected shells and pebbles for decoration of an 18th century-style pavilion which will be the focal point of the memorial garden, funded by the Queen Mother’s Memorial Fund for Scotland.

Every primary school in the country had been invited to take part in the project. An estimated 13,600 shells and pebbles will be used on the pavilion and pupils at the Newcraighall school will carefully select which hand picked treasures they will send to Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens where work on the garden is well underway.

The school headed to Newhailes House, a National Trust property formerly owned by the Dalrymple family and on whose land the school was built almost 100 years ago. The House features shells on its walls and the pupils gained some inspiration as they picked and chose their offering from the surrounding area.

Green Flag Successes
An incredible ten schools in Edinburgh can now boast  Green Flag status. This is a fantastic achievement for the school communities that have been involved in all the hard work. This term, Cowgate Under 5's, Echline, Kaimes School, Kirkliston Nursery, The Children's House Nursery, The Royal High PS and Towerbank were awarded the prestigious flag. The other three awarded schools are Currie Community High School, Portobello High School (who now hold a second Green Flag) and St. Leonard’s Nursery.

A total of 115 local authority (representing 75% of all local authority schools) and 13 private schools are now registered on the Eco Schools Programme in the city. Thirty-one schools in the city have gained a bronze award and ten have gained silver. In Scotland as a whole, 2000 schools have registered and almost 200 have gained a Green Flag.

Booker Prize event attended by Edinburgh Pupils
On 27 June, the first ever Man Booker International Prize was awarded in Edinburgh to Ismail Kadare, an Albanian writer and four pupils from St Augustine's were there. The pupils were invited to attend a civic reception and participate in the press conference which took place in the Playfair Library. This press conference was also attended by journalists from the BBC and The Scotsman.

The Man Booker Prize is given in recognition of achievement in published fiction, written either in English or translated into English.

Ivy League visitors comes to Tynecastle
Tynecastle High School was fortunate to have a visit from the Harvard Maths professors, Robert and Ellen Kaplan, on 17 June.

Disappointed by numerous reports that pupils find Maths difficult and boring, the Kaplans have set up” Math circles” in America and London to encourage people of any age to enjoy Maths and show how much fun it can be.

In Tynecastle, they worked with four groups of S3 pupils, setting challenges and getting the pupils to work out exciting challenges.  The students’ method of working out how to add up every fourth number between 20 and 180 will, according to Professor Kaplan, be known henceforth as the “Tynecastle method”.

The visit was covered by the Sunday Times and filmed by the BBC for a forthcoming programme on the history of Maths. For more information, you can visit the couple's website at www.themathcircle.org.

More reasons to celebrate at Towerbank
Towerbank recently celebrated achieving its Road Safety Gold Award and a green flag from eco-schools, in a joint awards assembly on Friday 17 June. Many guests from across the city attended, including Roy Jobson, Director of Children and Families, who was delighted to say a few congratulatory words to all the staff, pupils and parents from the school.

Towerbank is the first primary school in Edinburgh to achieve the green flag award and Kate Campbell, the judge from eco-schools, commented on how impressed she was with the whole school approach to eco-awareness.

It was a lovely day and one to remember. The school look forward to continuing its excellent practice with regards to road safety and eco-initiatives for many years to come. Remember the school's eco-code "Recycle - Reshape!"...if you haven't started yet, it is not too late!

What's Next?
The first ‘What’s Next’ (careers fair) took place on 25 May and was possibly the first of its kind in Scotland. The event was specifically for the city’s Looked after and Accommodated young people. Clients and frontline staff had a chance to meet with training providers at 10 Chester Street (Throughcare and Aftercare Building).

The options on display were suitable for clients with no, or few formal qualifications.

Providers included Edinburgh’s Colleges, The Army, Job Centre Plus, and a host of organisations such as Prince’s Trust and Fairbridge. The event was so successful, they may host another one in December.
