Go4It goes from strength to strength
This year’s Go4It and Play4It programmes are proving to be the most popular yet. Over 5500 places on a range of activities from street dance to go-karting and cookery classes were offered and waiting lists have had to be set up for many after selling out.

The Final Friday events are also promising to be the best yet. 500 people turned up to watch the Battle of the Bands contest, with the winners having the opportunity to perform alongside El Presidente at the Liquid Rooms, while a strong line-up has also been organised for the afternoon concert in Princes Street Gardens.

Organisers are already looking ahead to next summer and promise another year of action packed events for primary and secondary pupils.

Viewforth Child and Family Centre
The Viewforth Child and Family Centre offers a range of services to children 0-8 years and their families, providing them with a healthy and stimulating environment. Families are encouraged to achieve their potential, recognise their strengths and develop methods of coping with difficulties.

In addition to supporting the family's social and emotional needs, children benefit from the experiences provided by curriculum planning and implementation. All centres are provided with teacher support and as partner providers, staff are guided in this role. The unit has four playrooms, a multi-sensory room, and soft play area, sensory garden and outside play.

If you want to know more about the Child and Family Centre, you will have a chance to visit the centre and get to know the staff when they open their doors for an Open Day on 20 September between 12.30 and 15.30. Come along and say hello - everyone is welcome.

For your information

A preference for paper?
Does paper dominate your desk or work area? When searching for that certain piece of information do you find yourself sifting through piles of paper in different places?

It’s time to take action!

We are on a drive to make sense of the way we store our paper records and dispose of anything non-essential. At the moment, teams in all areas are listing all of their document types and deciding how long they should be kept. These details are being put together in documents called retention schedules, which, once complete, will show what paper records we should keep, how long for and what can be put in to paper recycling.

From October, the new records management policies will be in place and will help us to define what a record is and decide how long to keep it for as well as record and store it appropriately. You will be responsible for:

  • assigning end dates to records that you create
  • making sure that you dispose of those that are out of date.

Good records management is not just about following new procedures, it’s about a different way of thinking. Are you up for it?

Have you started clearing your desk and storage areas? If so, how did you find it? Is there anything holding you back? Do you have any general thoughts or ideas? Tell us what you think at smartcity@edinburgh.gov.uk

Get ready now - helpful hints!

Records Management Team member Andrena Mathieson, from Culture and Leisure, has put together some points to keep in mind when handling your paper:

  • why do I need to keep copies of papers when they are already in electronic files?
  • do I need to keep all those emails?
  • do I really need to print out this document or even this email?
  • do I really need this document….what value does this add?
  • do I need to keep all those magazines/journals?
  • are the documents I keep duplicates of those held by others?
  • have I been keeping copies of Council minutes, papers and reports when they are all available on Council Papers Online on the Council’s website?

Team Talk
The latest version of the Chief Executive's monthly update, Team Talk, is now available. This month's issue includes a thank you from the Chief Executive to all staff who have helped in the organisation, running and promotion of events related to the G8 summit.

Team Talk also provides an update of the Council Review 2007 and outlines a report on the next stage of the Council Review considered at the Executive meeting on 30 June. The report made proposals for the establishment of a new service grouping to be called "Services for Communities". This will set up, in one organisational structure, those Council activities which provide the 'liveability services'

If you would like to provide feedback on the issues raised in Team Talk or suggest issues for discussion please e-mail Teamtalk@edinburgh.gov.uk
