The follow-up report is highly positive and clearly demonstrates the progress made by the former Education since its initial inspection in 2002. Read the report.

Robust audit of child protection practices published in Edinburgh
A report on a robust audit of child protection practices has been produced by the new Children and Families Department in Edinburgh. It details the vast amount of progress which has made been since the O’Brien inquiry was published in October 2003.

An audit of 57 child protection case notes has been carried out and social workers were asked their views of practices in an anonymous questionnaire.

The vast majority of cases examined showed a high standard of professional practice. Almost all cases were deemed more than adequate with several examples of excellent practice and only a couple of instances where overall performance was deemed insufficient. Read more.

What do they do?  (NEW FEATURE!)

Youth Justice Services Edinburgh

The Youth Justice Service team work with young people up to the age of 17 years involved in offending behaviour.

The service is made up of three teams. All referrals are made directly by the Reporters Department.

  1. Resolution Team – Undertakes preventative and early work to stop progression into the Children’s Hearing system. This team is also the base for Restorative Justice which covers the whole service.

  2. Assessment Team – In depth assessments and future care plans are provided for the attention of the Reporters Department. All young people who have more than 5 charges – or are involved in a serious offence receive this service.

  3. Junction – Staff work with the most persistent and serious offenders over a period of approximately one year. Work ranges from individual support to groupwork and contact is maintained with familiar and external agencies involved in the case.

Youth Justice also includes a number of voluntary agencies who take the role of service providers following aforementioned assessment.

Staff attend Children’s Hearings, Reviews, Case Planning Meetings, Court, ASBO and ISMS Meetings and LAC Reviews.

Wherever possible, various reviews are incorporated into one to reduce stress on the young person and range of staff.

There is a significant library of resource materials available in the premises at 57 North Castle Street. Staff are welcome to access the materials and borrow for short periods of time.

Should anyone require further info or wish to visit, please call 0131 220 4510 or email Mary Lewis PTM at Mary.lewis@edinburgh.gov.uk

Competitions

Young Consumers of the Year 2005-2006
The Children and Families Department's Enterprise Team have approved the Young Consumers Programme as a relevant Enterprise Project. On completion of the study programme, schools can select a team to take part in a fun consumer quiz competition.

Winners of the Edinburgh heat go on to the Scottish Final, which takes place in Edinburgh in March. The top two teams from this final will go on to take part in the UK Finals, including an all-expenses paid trip to London in June.

There has been a recent change in the age restrictions, which will now enable most 6th year pupils to take part. Quiz team members must be at least 14 years old and under 18 on 31st December 2005. This means that participants could be S3 to S6 pupils.

Ideally, the programme should start before the end of September 2005, as our Edinburgh Final of the quiz competition will be at the beginning of December.

The course covers five main areas: Consumer & Legal Issues, Safety & Environment, Food & Health, Money and Finance and Europe & Travel.

Young Consumers has curricular links with a number of subjects including Citizenship, Home Economics, Personal & Social Education, Business Management, Economics, Modern Studies and Geography. We think it provides excellent knowledge and life skills for young people preparing to leave school. For more details and all the curricular links, visit the Young Consumers website at:

Success stories

Just a wee note to announce that the charitable comedy event held on 9 August to raise money for the survivors of Beslan has raised £6,000. Not only did they do well on ticket sales, but the very generous public in attendance donated over £1,000 on the night.  Well done!
