Schools plan back on track
The City of Edinburgh Council is delighted to announce great New Year news for the city’s schools.

The £180 million schools building programme (PPP2 - the second education public private partnership in the city and part of the Council’s Smart Schools Programme) is back on track following excellent progress with Axiom Education. Subject to some outstanding issues, Axiom will be named very soon as the preferred tenderer for the new build of eight schools. Work could start on some sites as early as this summer. Edinburgh pupils play in musical world première
Young people from Edinburgh schools performed a musical world première with musicians from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) at the Usher Hall on Friday 20 January, thanks to a grant from City of Edinburgh Council.

Viola Mysteries combined the forces of RSNO musicians and sixty Primary six and seven pupils from the Queensferry, Currie and Balerno areas. Solos were performed by senior pupils from Edinburgh Secondary Schools Orchestra, and the work also incorporated the electric guitar and the clarsach. Find out more.

Walter Smith opens new pitch at Braidburn
It was all smiles at Braidburn last week when Scotland Manager Walter Smith came to the school to officially open the school's new all weather accessible pitch.

Full and complete accessibility is vital to the activities at Braidburn as the school caters for many young people with physical, medical, learning, sensory and complex needs. The new pitch has been designed so pupils can access it straight from their playground with no steps or barriers to contend with.

The school’s connection with Walter Smith came about as a result of a visit some senior pupils from Braidburn made to Hampden. The young football fans made such an impression, the Scotland Manager wanted to visit the school and was delighted to be opening their new pitch. For the full story, click here.

Revolutionary science roadshow transforms high school
"It’s science… but not as you know it"
Primary and Secondary pupils experienced a science lesson unlike any other on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 January, when the University of Edinburgh’s outreach science Roadshow – SCI-FUN – brought forty interactive exhibits, two shows and a careers presentation to Forrester High School, and took exhibits to local Primary Schools.

Forrester’s assembly hall was transformed into a mini science centre for the day, complete with giant bubble, plasma globe, human circuit, bike generator and many more exciting, hands-on science exhibits. More info.

Arts and Learning

Based in Wellington Court, Arts and Learning is part of the Operational and Service Support group.

We provide arts and learning services from opera for four year olds, Composer Laureate for Schools, to star gazing with the Royal Observatory and samba drumming in the school holidays.

We can work with you to design and deliver creative programmes that support the cultural dimension in learning and enhance and support the school curriculum, out of school learning and community learning and development.

We initiate, develop and deliver learning opportunities for children, young people, families and communities that promote achievement, attainment and creativity, and develop skills, knowledge, confidence and self esteem.

We forge strong links with arts and non arts agencies - local, national and international - for the benefit of learners. "Culture" is interpreted in its widest form - from digital art and breakdancing to singing and film making.

In addition, the Instrumental Music Service (the largest in Scotland), provides direct support for the music curriculum and activities in schools, and delivers a wide range of opportunities through city wide bands and ensembles.

We aim to ensure that as many children as possible realise their musical potential through learning to play an instrument.

Councillor Brian Meek Memorial Essay Prize
A new essay writing competition is being launched by City of Edinburgh Council in memory of our much respected, late colleague, Councillor Brian Meek.

As you may know, Councillor Meek was Edinburgh's longest, continuously serving Councillor, serving from 1969-2004, until his premature death in August 2004. As well as this, Councillor Meek was an award winning columnist and sports journalist so it is fitting that the City should honour his memory by launching an annual essay writing competition.

Councillor Meek's widow, Frances Horsburgh, has kindly agreed to donate the prizes - £200 worth of book tokens for the winner and £200 worth of book tokens for the winner’s school. The winner will also receive a framed certificate and trophy and the prize will be presented at the Full Council Meeting which is closest to the anniversary of Cllr Meek’s death.

The title of the essay is My Edinburgh. For more details and entry requirements, click here.

Success stories

Czech Rep learns from Scottish example

Since joining the E.U., the Czech Republic has been reviewing its childcare, the need for secure accommodation and an improved welfare provision for children.

During the latter part of 2004 and early in 2005 the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, has been finding out what provision is available in the rest of Western Europe.

John Steven, Depute Principal (Care) at Edinburgh Secure Services was part of a Scottish delegation invited to the Czech Republic to attend an international conference in May 2005. They gave a presentation on the ‘Scottish Model’ of Secure Accommodation and how it fits into the Scottish childcare system.

Since then, their hosts have highlighted the Scottish Model of childcare as one of the best and one they wish to try adapt for their country.

In December 2005, in continuing to foster relationships with their European partners, representatives visited and spent 3 days visiting secure accommodation provision throughout Scotland.

Their visit to Edinburgh Secure Services was the highlight of their tour where the focus was how to care for the most vulnerable young people within our society without impinging on their rights.

Clovenstone fundraising success
Children, staff, parents and friends of Clovenstone Primary School are thrilled and proud to have raised an amazing £1350.14 for various charities throughout 2005.

In January, a Scottish Evening raised a massive £335.76 which was donated to the Tsunami Appeal. McMillan Cancer Research benefited to the tune of £251.10 from money raised when staff held a Coffee Morning and raffle.

During Ramadan, children learned about this important time in the Islamic Calendar and each class was given the chance to fill a small box with pennies for Islamic Relief. These boxes, when filled, raised £34.19 which went to the Asian Earthquake Appeal.

In November, smiling children could be seen going home from school clutching large bags of toys and goodies after our Toy Sale which raised £400.

The holiday season sent parents and friends flocking to the Wester Hailes Shopping Centre when P6 and P7 with their P1 Buddies sang carols to a generous audience who donated £72.89. As a result of both these efforts, a grand total of £472.89 was given to Children 1st.

The last week of the Christmas term is always busy and this year was no exception! Our Christmas Carol concert and raffle raised £256.20 for Cancer Research UK (Scotland).

As a school, Clovenstone Primary tries to encourage good citizenship and care and kindness for others and so everyone at the school would like to thank all the people who helped them to achieve this AMAZING total.

I spent a delightful morning out at Ferryhill Primary School earlier this month to mark the end of the Royal Bank Supergrounds Project. I attended the launch of this project some 3 years ago at Craigentinny Primary School. 24 playgrounds and £168,000 later, the project has been so outstandingly innovative that the Royal Bank has rolled it out all over Britain to the tune of £3 million. It’s nice to know we‘ve helped others as well as ourselves.

It was a great relief also to be able to announce last week that the PPP2 part of our smart schools programme is back on track. Important news for the eight schools involved. Interestingly, the difficulties we found ourselves in last September have meant we have consulted even more than we would otherwise have done and as a result I am told schools are very excited about the designs being presented.

For those who have not yet seen the designs and had a chance to comment on them, fear not. We want these new schools to become a focus for local communities so now need to talk more widely about how facilities can be best developed. Once we formally reach the preferred tenderer stage, which I hope will be very soon, schools will exhibit the designs. As well as staff and students, schools will invite neighbours and local organisations to come in and talk about the plans.

I spent time last week with one such community project, The Forrestine’s Project, and was very impressed by the wide range of activities on offer there. The project clearly provides valuable support through its varied programme of groupwork, sport and community activities.

Executive Member for Children and Families
