Windows for Peace

5th and 6th year students from James Gillespies and Drummond High Schools have taken time out of their holiday this week to meet with young people from Israel and Palestine currently here in Edinburgh for 2 weeks at a summer school organised by Windows for Peace. See www.windowsforpeaceuk.org for information on the project which aims to bring young people together to share their experiences and build bridges for the future. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Edinburgh students to learn about the conflict from a real and personal point of view on all sides. Once they have returned to Tel Aviv, to Jaffa and to Bethlehem the young people will produce a newsletter to coincide with Peace Day on 21 September. The Edinburgh young people will also contribute to that newsletter and plan to stay in touch with the Windows group via e-mail.

On September 20th a team of 18 volunteers (aged 18-25) from China and the UK will be arriving in Edinburgh to spend over 6000 hours engaged in voluntary work on local community projects for 10 weeks and we are appealing for community hosts. Can you host a pair of volunteers in your home?

Staff Working Abroad

Are you or a member of your staff planning to go abroad for work? This could be for a conference, to attend a meeting as part of an EU funded project such as Comenius, a risk assessment visit prior to an excursion, or any other reason at all other than trips accompanying young people. All Heads of Establishments and Business Managers have received a reminder of the Approval to Work Abroad Form. If you need a copy please contact us or download the form here. All sections must be filled in with as much detail as possible for reporting and monitoring purposes. Even if your trip is taking place in school holiday time or is fully funded externally, you need to have this form signed to ensure you are covered by the Council's insurance policy.
