New Report on Race Statistics in Scotland
With the lack of information on race and racism increasingly recognised, Glasgow Anti Racist Alliance (GARA) has launched its "State of the Nation - Race and Racism in Scotland 2008" report, a collation of statistics and data relating to Black/Minority Ethnic (BME) people in Scotland. The statistics have been gathered from a number of sources, including Scottish Government publications, academic research, and studies carried out by voluntary organisations.
A copy of the Race and Racism in Scotland report can be downloaded here.
New Ethnicity Classification
The Chief Statistician and the Registrar General for Scotland have published a report on Scotland's new official ethnicity classification. The new classification will:
- *extend the number of ethnic groups information is collected on from 14 to 21
- *build a more accurate picture of Scotland's population
- *identify discrimination when used with other census and survey questions
Ethnicity statistics are vital because Government and public authorities are encouraged to collect them to meet statutory obligations under race relations legislation for tackling discrimination and promoting equality. They are also used to inform resource allocation, policy formulation and service delivery and they help to provide a better understanding of Scotland's ethnic diversity.
