Welcome to education in Edinburgh

An inspiring educational experience

Handbook

We all know that a child's years at school are among the most important of their lives. The whole experience of school, both in and out of the classroom, will help to shape your child’s future. Here in Edinburgh we want to provide education of the highest quality that will let every one of our pupils reach their full potential. Our schools celebrate diversity of talent, background, ability and ambition.

This handbook highlights the wide range of opportunities and activities available for children in areas such as the arts, sport and creativity. As well as outlining our policies and procedures, we have tried to highlight some of the ways you can take an active role to support your school in your child’s education. We hope you find this information helpful.

We trust this handbook answers many of the questions you have about the city’s schools, but we know it can’t answer all your questions. Further information about schools and the wider services provided by the Children and Families Department can be found on the Department’s Edinburgh Grid for Learning website www.egfl.net or the Council’s website www.edinburgh.gov.uk

You can also visit any school to which you’re interested in sending your child. Please phone the school directly to find the best time to see for yourself what they can offer.
