Who We Are and What We Do

The City of Edinburgh Council Children and Families Department was created in April 2005. The Department brings together all the services previously provided by the Education Department and the Children and Families part of the Social Work Department.

The Children and Families Department has been set up to provide integrated services to children and their families across the city and ensure services can be developed to meet local needs at a local level. In August 2005, five new local service areas will be developed. These local services will be further developed over the next two years to ensure they can meet local needs and we expect fully integrated local services to be fully in place by April 2007.

The Department is made up of 'groups' that support the provision of children and families services. The groups are:

  • Neighbourhood Services
  • Infrastructure and Support
  • Quality Development
  • Strategic Planning
  • Service Development
  • Support for Children, Young People and Families

Latest News

A page on the Council's main website has been created in response to requests from parents and staff who want to be able to easily access information on some of the current areas of interest in Children and Families.

The department also publishes a regular staff newsletter for staff, parents and others to find out more about the latest news, events and the great work being done in Edinburgh.

Schools

We have 18 nursery schools, 94 primary schools (78 of which have nursery classes), 23 secondary schools and 13 schools for children with special educational needs. During the 2004/2005 session education is being provided for 26,183 primary school pupils and 20,140 secondary school pupils. Nursery places were available for all pre-school children whose parents wished their children to participate. Places are also available for many 3 year olds.

Community Education

Community Education in Edinburgh provides learning opportunities to individuals, families, interest groups and communities that are working to improve the quality of their lives.

Hopefully, we shall have touched and enriched some part of your or your family's life. Perhaps through a holiday playscheme or an evening class, a project or event at your local Community Centre or an international exchange. The opportunities are varied and many.

Social Work Services

The Children and Families department deliver a wide range of Social Work Services. Find out more on the Council's main website, under Social Care > Children and Families.
