About the unit

The Sports & Outdoor Education Unit, part of the Children & Families Department of the City of Edinburgh Council, has a major input to Sports, Outdoor Education and Physical Education for young people via Curricular, Extra Curricular and Community Learning and Development. The Active Schools Edinburgh programme is a joint initiative between City of Edinburgh Council and sportscotland as part of the Healthy Living Campaign.

Outdoor Education Centres

Lagganlia

Benmore provides fully catered and serviced outdoor education / adventurous activity weeks or weekends for groups of up to 100 people.

Lagganlia (pictured) provides custom made outdoor education courses for schools, community groups and other users.

Sports Development

Footballers

Football - A programme of activities, in partnership with the Scottish Football Association, including coaching, midnight leagues, 4v4 and Soccer Sevens.

Rugby - There are many programmes running across the city that aim to introduce the sport to new players, help existing players improve their skills and create a pathway for the most talented to maximise their potential.

Cycling - Cycling means so many different things to a diverse range of people. Regardless of who you are, where you cycle, or what bike you ride, cycling can play a significant part of following a healthy lifestyle.

Sports Academy (PDF, 2.2MB) - A training and support programme designed to assist talented pupils reach their sporting potential. (Unfortunately, the March 2008 application deadline has passed but new application dates will be shown here once they are announced)
