Duke of Edinburgh's Award Unit

What is it?

It's an activity based programme for young people in the 14 – 25 age range.  It gives young people recognition for achievement, gets them involved in something really positive in their leisure time, and involves lots of fun.  There are three levels of Award; Bronze, Silver and Gold.  And each young person takes part in four different activities largely of their own choice;  Expedition, Skill, Physical Recreation, and Community Service.

How is the Award programme delivered to young people?

Any agency or organisation which is working with young people can take the programme and use it as a structure to their work.  This is administered through a licensed 'Operating Authority' - in this case, the City of Edinburgh Council.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Unit is a big partnership involving a number of projects and agencies with the clear purpose of supporting a large number of Award Groups, a great many Award Leaders (mainly volunteers), and an even bigger number of young people.  It includes:

Young people

There are currently about 1400 young people taking part in the Award programme through the City of Edinburgh Council.  These include young people from every corner of the City, of every ability and interest, and are evidence that the Award is 'Open to All'.

Leaders

 To make it all happen for these young people, there is a small army of leaders, nearly all of whom are volunteers.  They bring their talents and skill, enthusiasm and commitment, and put all of this to good use in enabling young people to achieve big things for themselves.  Many of the leaders hold NGB qualifications, and the leader development programmes are aimed at ensuring that all those who wish to, can obtain the training they need.
