Active Schools Edinburgh

The Active Schools Edinburgh programme is a joint initiative between City of Edinburgh Council and sportscotland as part of the Healthy Living Campaign. The programme was identified as a key element of the Scottish Executive’s drive to get more people in Scotland active; a commitment outlined in the National Physical Activity Strategy.

The Scottish Executive has been developing a range of partnerships and establishing actions to take this work forward under the banner of the Healthy Living Campaign. The programme is being developed in partnership with Scottish Executive’s Health Promoting Schools Unit.

The main aim of the Active Schools Edinburgh is to offer school-aged children the motivation and opportunities to adopt active, healthy lifestyles throughout their school years and into adulthood. Active Schools is not just about encouraging more children to take part in sport and exercise. It aims to introduce more physical activity into their daily lives through active travel, play and dance.

More People, More Active More Often’

The Active Schools Edinburgh team consists of 16 primary, 23 secondary, 2 SEN co-ordinators and 2 managers. All primary and secondary schools in Edinburgh have a co-ordinator assigned to their school who have gone through physical activity and health induction training in conjunction with NHS Lothian. These co-ordinators are responsible for working in partnership to increase the range of quality opportunities for pupils to become physically active.
